“Trust in the Lord with all of your heart and lean not on your own understanding; In all of your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your path straight” (Prov. 3:5).
Before we charge into a new year it would be wise to take a few moments and ask ourselves if we are trusting in the Lord or trusting in man. God’s great desire for all of His children is that they learn to rest in the finished work of His Son Jesus. Because of His victory over death, hell, and the grave, our position in Christ is unchanging. God’s Word declares: “He has raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in Christ Jesus” (Eph. 2:6). Spiritually speaking, our position is secure, but for many Christians their personal relationship with the Father is another matter.
Let me share the number one reason that born again believers struggle with trusting in the Lord with all their heart. They still live their lives under the Old Covenant Law, believing that in spite of Grace, that God still holds their sins and failures against them. Yet God’s Word declares, “The Law was our tutor to lead us to Christ” (Gal. 3:24). which means that the Law is no longer our master, Jesus is. Hear carefully the miracle of the paralytic recorded in Mathew, Mark, and Luke. Friends had lowered him down in a basket where he lay helpless in front of Jesus. Seeing his condition, Jesus did not address his physical plight, instead He addressed his spiritual plight. He said, “Take courage, son, your sins are forgiven” (Matt. 9:2). Until Jesus released him from his sins, he was powerless to walk and enjoy life, but the moment he became sin free, he was able to obey the voice of Jesus when He said, “Get up, pick up your bed and go home” (Matt. 9:7). In the same way the power of the Cross delivered every born again believer from sin at the very moment they said “Yes” to Jesus. Dear friends, your sins have been forgiven, past, present, and future, never to be remembered again. Too good to be true? It’s not! It is the Gospel Truth. The Gospel Truth is not “Turn or burn,” even though those words are true. The Gospel Truth is “Take courage ______, your sins are forgiven.”
As we begin our new year, Penny and I encourage you to revel in the great plan that Jesus has for you. It is not an ordinary plan, it is a plan that is far greater than you could ever ask for or imagine. Let Jesus love you so that you can begin seeing yourself as He sees you, sin free. Your sins have been forgiven.
Going forward into this year, the Lord has instructed me to write as He leads, and to that end I will do. That means that I will not send out devotionals on a weekly basis, but as He leads. Do you know someone who is struggling in their marriage? Tell them about our book, Great Life Great Marriage, or better still, invest fifteen dollars and give them a copy. When we get our vertical lives in order, our marriages will prosper. If you haven’t already, sign up on our web site to receive our devotionals. There are many articles that touch on different topics that will help explain how the Kingdom operates. We covet your prayers. In Christ, Don & Penny.
