In both Charismatic and Pentecostal circles it is not uncommon to hear someone “bind Satan” as they pray. Is this biblical? Did Christ give His Church spiritual authority that transcends into the spiritual realm? Do Christians actually have the authority to bind Satan? If so how does it work, and will this authority work for every born again believer? Let’s lay aside our preconceived ideas and dogmas for the moment and look into the Word of God. The Truth, and only the Truth has the power to set us free.
Some denominations teach that because God is sovereign nothing happens on earth, good or bad, unless it is His will that it happens. We need look no further than the second chapter of Genesis to see that such theology is simply not true. God commanded Adam, “From the tree of the knowledge of Good and Evil you shall not eat” (Gen. 2:17). Adam knew it was God’s will to not eat of that tree, but he ate of it anyway. Fast forward to Cain, Abraham, Moses, David, and even the apostle Peter and a quick study reveals that each of them knew God’s express will, but chose their own will over His. For what it’s worth, we could put our name into this infamous pot as well. Get the picture? God’s will is not always done here on earth but our actions do not diminish His sovereignty one iota. Here is the truth: “The heavens are the Lord’s but the earth He has given to man” (Ps. 115:16). “God watches over His Word to perform it” (Jer. 1:12),
The First Adam lost his God given authority to the works of Satan. The last Adam, Jesus, destroyed the works of Satan and took back our authority. How do we activate our God given authority? By speaking His Word and His promises. Jesus said that what we bind on earth is bound in heaven, and what we loose on earth is loosed in heaven (Matt. 18:18). There is all power and authority in the name of Jesus. In the name of Jesus we loose his will into our lives by declaring, “I walk in divine heath and everything I put my hands to prospers, even as my soul prospers” (3 John 2). In the name of Jesus we bind the enemy by declaring, “No weapon formed against me shall prosper: (Is. 54:17). These are but two of hundreds of God’s promises that are available to every believer. We must not only speak His promises, we must believe that God will cause them to manifest. Dear Reader, if you have received Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, the indwelling Holy Spirit provides you with all power and dominion over every evil spirit, but there is a limitation.
We do not have the power to bind Satan or his demonic angels and send them into hell. It always gets people excited when some prayer warrior “binds” Satan and casts him into the pits of hell, but such prayers do not carry with them the authority of Jesus. If they did, Satan would be sitting in hell, bound both hand and foot, but he is not sitting in hell. He is still the prince and power of this earth and is busy pouring out his venom as never before because he knows that his time is short. Very soon, Jesus will return and Satan will be bound for a thousand years. (Rev. 20-2-3) Does Jesus have to bind him? No, Jesus doesn’t have to dirty His hands on Satan. The scriptures say that one of His angels will bind him. Don’t miss this great truth, any angel in heaven is more powerful than Satan or any of his demons and so are we. He will then be released and allowed to deceive the nations, and amazingly, many will follow him. Jesus will then destroy them all with the breath of His mouth. Satan will once again be bound and cast into the Lake of Fire for all eternity.
James 4:7 “Submit yourself unto the Lord, resist the devil and he will flee from you.” Let’s stick to that for now, and praise God daily that what we bind on earth is bound in heaven, and what we loose on earth is loosed in heaven. Give Him praise!
